7 Types Of Labels And Their Applications
Even the smallest label can have a big impact. Whether designed to communicate information, warn of possible dangers, give usage instructions, provide a list of ingredients or offer environmental advice, product labels serve an important function. Customizable, easy-to-use, and available in a wide range of materials, the many types of labels available allow you to select the best choice for your purpose and industry.
Below are seven types of labels with an explanation of how they may be best used.
1. Die cut. The most flexible label on this list, die-cut labels are cut into distinctive shapes for branding or aesthetic reasons and are often used on uniquely shaped containers.
2. Dry peel. Adhesive-backed and easily peeled and removed, they are often used for point of purchase discounts or to provide additional directions or information.
3. Fold out. Similar to dry peel labels, fold-out labels give additional details or instant coupons, folding out like an accordion. They may be fully removable or refoldable.
4. Resealable. Just what they sound like, these reseal the opening to a package or container and are usually placed over the opening to snack foods, lunch meats, or wipes.
5. Pressure sensitive. Similar to stickers, these are made of several layers sandwiched together and require pressure to form a bond between the adhesive and product. Used for automotive products, household goods, and food and beverage containers.
6. Shrink (sleeve). Providing both protection and customization, the label shrinks and conforms to the container when exposed to heat for both a tamper-resistant seal and a 360-degree display.
7. Direct thermal. Economical and environmentally friendly, direct thermal printing uses a thermal print head to heat chemically treated paper to change color and form an image (usually red and/or black). Typical uses include bar codes, receipts, packaging and shipping labels, and coupons.
